A study commissioned by the University of Minnesota has found that 8% of sports fans are drunk by the time they leave the stadium. Eh. That sounds a little low. A problem with the study is that they have only reached out spectators at 13 baseball games and 3 football games, which doesn’t sound like a very representative sample of sports.

For instance, there’s hockey. People love to get shitfaced at hockey games. Maybe it’s the cold, but it’s more likely the fact that people would like to get hammered and watch a fight. Lord knows I would. As for baseball games, I view them like I view going to jury duty. Would being drunk really make it that much better? Maybe, but I’m not going to pay $75 bucks to find out.

Football, I totally get. Football games are cold, long and rowdy. Of course those guys are going to be drunk. It’s not like they’re the ones PLAYING football. The researchers said their sample size was small because it was hard to hit fans up for a breathalyzer as they left the stadium. Shocking.

Full report here.

I can assure you this number is low- especially if you add in the people who watch games at home, bars, etc. And lots of amateur players drink prior/during/after their own games. Beer league has the name for a reason…

Have a great weekend!
